Guess what?
August 2-8, 2015 has been designated National Farmers Market Week!
By now I think you know. I’m a fan of farmers markets (you do know this right?) And it’s exciting to know a week has been set aside to recognize the important role that they play in our community. But a whole week to celebrate farmers markets got me to thinking – just how popular are they – it isn’t just me who is crazy for them is it? And just how have they have evolved over the years?
So I did a little research. Did you know that there are 5,000 more farmers markets now than there were in 2008? Thats 5,000 more in just 7 years! Hmm, obviously I’m not the only one who enjoys a good farmers market.
But what about the first farmers market? How long ago, where was it, does it still exist? Well, the history of farmers markets in the United States dates back to 1730 in Lancaster, PA. When the town was built, it was designed for the center to be a public market. The market became a place for people to gather and socialize. In fact, ever heard the phrase “Meet Me at the Market”? Well, that’s where it originated! The market became so popular that in later years several “curb markets” popped up around town featuring additional locals selling their goods. Today, this main market area has been rebuilt and is known as Lancaster Central Market. If you ask me, it looks like a pretty cool place to visit!
Ok, so I don’t want to beat you to death with the notion that you need to visit your local farmers market (and you should!) But I think it’s pretty cool that a concept such as the farmers market has survived through all these years despite all the popular commercial food market chains. Don’t you agree?
So really, there is no better time to visit your local farmers market than this week, National Farmers Market week, to show your support. The week may be half over but it’s not too late!
