Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Testing
What is SIBO?
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition characterized by an excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine. This overgrowth can lead to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. A SIBO test is used to help identify the presence of excessive bacteria in the small intestine and guide appropriate treatment.
How to test for SIBO
Several tests are available to diagnose SIBO. A simple breath test is the least invasive and involves drinking a solution containing glucose (a sugar) followed by breath samples collected at intervals. Elevated levels of hydrogen and methane in the breath indicate bacterial overgrowth. What great about this is that SIBO testing can be done in the comfort of your home!
Interpreting SIBO test results requires expertise. Elevated levels of hydrogen, methane, or other compounds in the breath samples indicate bacterial overgrowth. However, the interpretation can vary based on the type of test, cutoff values used, and individual factors.
