Best Fork Forward: Create a Healthy Eating Style

Do you have a healthy eating style?

What’s your healthy eating style?

Did you know there is more than one way to eat healthfully? Yup – everyone has their own style. Your style is based on foods you like, your culture, your traditions and your budget.

So where do you start? Well, making healthier food choices shouldn’t be complicated. Think nutrient-rich rather than “good” versus “bad” foods. What’s a nutrient-rich food? A food that’s full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other beneficial nutrients.  Think variety. Choose foods from all the food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and dairy.

The key? Find ways to be healthy that you enjoy. Think about it – if you enjoy something aren’t you more apt to stick with it? Of course you are! What’s the point of creating a healthy eating style if your not going to stick with it?!

Oh I know – old habits die hard. And I know changing your habits is a process. But guess what? You don’t need to make huge changes to eat healthier. Start small. Every small change you make helps build positive habits. And making small changes will be beneficial over time. Remember, adopting a new healthy eating style may help protect you from serious health problems. And more than likely, you’ll look and feel better (hint: more energy!).

So what are some things you can do? Focus on adding healthier foods. Maybe add a new fruit or vegetable to every meal. Don’t like broccoli? Then try green beans. Don’t like blueberries? Then try raspberries. Begin by adding whole grains to some of your meals. Swap out brown rice for white rice. Or swap out whole grain for white bread. Remember it’s up to you – find out what you like and build from there. Instead of cutting out foods that aren’t so nutrient-rich, limit them – make them “sometimes foods”.

And don’t forget – listen to your body – are you hungry? Eat! Are you full? Stop eating!  Make meals pleasurable – slow down, relax and enjoy your food. After all , eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures isn’t it? So go ahead – put your best fork forward!

What small changes are you ready to make?
