National Nutrition Month: When & Why We Eat

When do you know you’re hungry? When does “I want chocolate” really mean “I’m stressed out”?

Why are you eating? What emotions or situations cause you to eat? Do you find yourself eating even when you’re not hungry?

Let’s face it, sometimes it’s hard to determine when you’re hungry or if it’s just emotions getting in the way. So how do you figure this out, right? Well, start by trying to identify the feelings you have at that moment you turn to food. I’ll be honest – you may be uncomfortable and it may take some time to do this.  Be patient.

Ask yourself some questions – what are you actually looking for ? Are you seeking comfort? Are you bored? What has triggered the desire to turn to food?

What is a trigger anyway? Well, it’s something that causes something to happen. Maybe a certain food or situation is a trigger that causes you to mindlessly eat. Oh I know what you’re thinking – well just avoid the trigger! I know – it’s your first instinct I get it. But really what this is doing is giving the trigger more power than it deserves. Instead of running the other way, stop a minute before acting on the impulse. Allowing this break or being mindful of how you feel and why you are turning to food decreases the chances of eating if you aren’t hungry. Triggers can make it very easy to forget the essential purpose of food – to nourish us and provide us energy.

So take some time out and learn to become aware of your feelings – think about the when & why. As this happens, start to take time to decide on healthier coping mechanisms – take a walk, read a book or watch your favorite show – fill that void with something other than food. And hey, if you decide that you really are hungry well – then eat!
